Getting Started With Affiliate Marketing

A few people have asked me over the past few weeks about affiliate marketing on the internet and how it works. Well many web users have heard about the success of sites like Groupon. 99.9% of Groupon's income was from affiliate marketing.

How can I start affiliate marketing?

It is actually rather quite simple to start affiliate marketing.  These days you don't even need a website to start, you just need a responsive following. This can be on any social network, although for best results a website will be worth the time and money it takes to set-up. Once you have your website setup you will need to add a privacy policy page stating how the website uses cookies and what they are used for. Many affiliate platforms will help you by providing a sample privacy policy. If not you can always search for free online privacy policy generators. Once your website is in good order you can begin to join affiliate marketing websites. These sites manage 'cost per action' (CPA) marketing campaigns for a variety of well known brands.  You can find multiple brands within your niche category and then click to join each brands program. Some companies or brands will approve you automatically whilst some will need to approve you first.  Once approved you will then be able to generate your own unique affiliate url's.

How do affiliate url's work?

Each affiliate url that is generated is unique and contains a cookie which acts as a tracking code to award you your commission.  This cookie is usually active for 30, 60 or 90 days, the length of thia period will depend on the advertiser.

Do I get a discount as well as a commission?

In many cases companies will privide coupons exclusive to affiliates. This is how coupon sites make so much money. The coupon codes they offer are actually earning them a tidy commission. You can get your hands in the action too!!

What are some good sites to stary with?

Viglink
Viglink automatically converts any brand-able words into affiliate links, making it a lot easier to get setup. All you need to do is add some code to your website and the monetized links will automatically start appearing.

Shareasale
This is a good one that has quite a few reputable brands. They are also good at sending out payments to affiliates.

Linkshare
Linkshare has quite a few good brands but a problem with Linkshare is the links generated can only be used in certain countries. For example, you will need to generate seperate affiliate links for Canada,  United States and United Kingdom. This is not a problem if you are using an ad server script with geographic targeting or you only looking to target visitors in one country.

Commission Junction
Cj.com is a big site with many well know brands. You will need to get approved by the affiliate manager for each program before you can any affiliate links. Before becoming a member of Commission Junction you also need to get pre-approved so it is a good idea to make sure your site is in good order before hand.
